This effect was first brought to mainstream attention by filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock in his 1958 masterpiece, Vertigo. In this article we explain what it is, where it was first used and how technology has evolved to allow anyone to recreate it effectively.
Origins of the Dolly Zoom effect
The dolly zoom was created by cinematographer Irmin Roberts, who designed the technique for Vertigo. It involves moving the camera closer or farther from the subject while simultaneously adjusting the zoom lens in the opposite direction. This combination keeps the subject roughly the same size in the frame while dramatically altering the perspective, creating a visual compression or expansion of the background.
Hitchcock employed the effect to convey the psychological turmoil of the film’s protagonist, Scottie, who suffers from acrophobia (fear of heights). The dolly zoom is most famously used in a sequence where Scottie looks down a staircase, the effect mimicking his vertigo and height-induced dizziness. This marked the first major use of the effect and cemented its association with psychological unease and surrealism.
After Vertigo, the dolly zoom gained popularity among filmmakers as a tool to heighten emotional tension or create an unsettling atmosphere. Steven Spielberg notably used the technique in Jaws (1975) to emphasize Chief Brody’s realization of a shark attack on the beach. The effect was also used in Goodfellas (1990) by Martin Scorsese to highlight paranoia and pressure during an intense diner conversation.
With advancements in digital tools, the dolly zoom has become more accessible to creators, even without specialised camera equipment. Drone technology and post-production software allow filmmakers to replicate the effect virtually from the skies, expanding its use beyond traditional cinematography. Today, the dolly zoom remains a powerful visual device, beloved by filmmakers for its ability to convey emotion, alter perspective, and immerse audiences in a character’s psychological experience.
How to create the Dolly Zoom effect with drone footage
There are two ways that you can achieve this - all during filming, or by adding the effect post-production.
Why Create the Dolly Zoom Effect in Post-Production?
- Flexibility in Framing and Timing:
- When creating the dolly zoom effect manually, both the camera movement and zoom must be perfectly synchronised. Any mismatch can lead to jerky or uneven results. By filming first and applying the zoom in post-production, you gain complete control over the timing and intensity of the effect.
- Limitations of Drone Cameras:
- Drones are not equipped with optical zoom lenses as standard (many use fixed wide-angle lenses). While some higher-end drones allow for limited zooming, the precision required for the dolly zoom is best achieved in editing. If you do have the option of an optical zoom, this can deliver better image quality, as you are already losing some quality with a digital zoom - whether this is done during filming or in post-production.
- Improved Safety and Smoothness:
- Flying a drone while managing simultaneous zooming can be complex and risky, especially in tight or dynamic environments. Capturing a smooth backward flight and handling the zoom in post reduces stress and enhances safety.
